Hrishikesh Mukherjee adieu.

We were just talking about Hrishikesh Mukherjee today, because we had all watched "Golmaal" yesterday, and laughed our hearts out. Remembering "Tujhko maaf nahi, saaf kar doonga", or "Tum police officer nahi, foolish officer hai", or those beautifully subtle humorous moments that poke at the hindi film industry, and gently nudges the middle class culture into a mainstream movie subject. He was one of my favorite movie directors, one of whom I always turn to when I am down, or just need a laugh tinged with nostalgia. The gentleness and "non-over-the-top" tone in his movies were such a breath of fresh air in the melodrama laden atmosphere of Bollywood.

And today I read on Uma's blog that he is no more. And I can only reiterate her words, thank you, and thank god for each of those movies that kept me sane through those first 3 months of grad school.

Rediff has a nice article on him here.

"You will not be able to bring my Ganga here"

Another related article from the archives here.

I still remember a very young me, bleary-eyed, dropping off to sleep and yet retaining the sweetness of sound in my ears as I lay on my parents lap during a SPIC MACAY performance. Since then, I have heard a few of his live concerts, definitely not as many as I would have liked to attend, and now I regret there will be no more. None of that magnitude, that charisma, the mischief and the humbleness - such a potent combination. An end of an era.

And finally, the sounds of his music.
